Chandima Weerakkody is not a novice to politics, by any means.
He hails from a family with many illustrious political figures that many generations of Galle district voters trusted, believed and relied on. Many politicians that people chose as their representatives for many years, knowing very well that they never betrayed peoples’ trust.
Chandima was involved in politics, specially of Galle district and of Southern province in general, many years before he became a provincial councilor.
It begins in 1993, when winds of change began to blow over a country plagued by state sponsored thuggery, corruption and mismanagement. It started from the Southern province, where SLFP led alliance emerged victorious in provincial council elections. That was the starting point of good governance, rule of law and true democracy to which this country was returned, that to date prevails with peoples’ support.
Chandima was an active player that figured prominently to establish democratic rights of voters, when the then ruling party appointed governor of Southern province fled away from the province to prevent fall of power. Chandima was a front runner that braved all barriers purposefully created, to ensure that peoples’ will prevailed by taking all necessary measures to institute SLFP led provincial government. That was the beginning of a journey that to date, never abandoned voters of Galle district in their quest for democracy, development and justice.
Chandima was elected to the Southern province provincial council in 2000, as people realized the true potential of this emerging politician. His tenure as a councilor was very fruitful to the Galle district voters, across the entire district as he served them without any divide. His true sense of gentlemanly politics was well demonstrated when he voluntarily stepped aside to provide more opportunities to others from Galle, without contesting for a second term. When all known politicians are in the habit of contesting as many terms as they can, eagerly eyeing the associated perks and benefits, that was a genuine sacrifice made in the name of democracy. It was not because he was disliked by the voters or that he feared for it. The fact that he continued to serve people of Galle, establishing a base at Habaraduwa and the fact that he was later elected as a member of parliament from Galle district, bears ample testimony to that.
Even during the period when Chandima was not an elected member of any forum, he never sent away the people. He never abandoned voters of Galle, in good times and in bad times, irrespective of the fact he was not an elected member. The devastating Tsunami of 2004 is the best example. Chandima was the only politician that braved the tsunami waters to reach all affected communities at their most critical hour of need. He did not wait for state funds to provide relief. He was able to garner support from all around the world without delay, days before official help lines were established. He provided hope to thousands of people who were isolated and abandoned by their own regional politicians.
Chandima is a politician that comes with character, knowledge, experience and capacity to serve the people.
He hails from a family that has an unblemished political history. Chandima is not a politician tainted with corruption. He is not a politician with bloodied hands. If there is anything that people speak of him, it’s about how he has helped people. There is no mentioning of his name along with known corrupt politicians. Yet he is a person that has served people beyond their expectations. General idea is that so long as you keep away from politics, you can remain as a clean person. Chandima is a person that has defied that norm. He has served people with kindness and affection; has gone beyond the expected limits to serve them, yet remains a character with no black marks.
Being a lawyer by profession, he is well versed with law, the essential element of knowledge for a people’s representative. His service to the motherland in fact started when he initially joined the Attorney General’s Department, where he battled for the rights of state; of this country; of its people. The discipline and law abiding nature inculcated with the legal profession, has truly moulded him to be a man that respects law; to act with justice; to avoid injustice.
His tenure as the Chairman of the Southern Development Authority is still fondly remembered by many Southerners. It was during his period that many Southern voters became aware of its very existence! He made it a tool to serve the people, brought it closer to them and made them the real beneficiaries if it, so much to the extent that during his Chairmanship, many of the South called it ape SDA eka!! It was truly a rare occasion where people really felt that a certain state organization is actually theirs! Many developments plans that were mooted during his period are now benefiting the people immensely.
Chandima has gained experience in such critical areas as the world of finance as well. He successfully navigated the State Mortgage and Investment Bank as its Chairman, re-orienting its business plans with novelty, by attracting many new customers. The bank which was for years known as a very lethargic state bank was converted in to an entity that attracted customers mainly from the private sector. Finance actually is an aspect that is generally even more than Greek for politicians! But Chandima demonstrated his skills well, by affecting various programmes with success. Though many people for years thought that no change of attitude of state employees is possible at a place like the State Mortgage and Investment Bank, he successfully effected many changes winning the employees’ support as well. The bank emerged as a better known financial institution with due recognition among the business community, from being a mere housing financier serving a limited number of public servants. He not only effected a successful change of course in the bank, its employees and customers but demonstrated a superior skill in the world of finance as well.
During his tenure as a member of parliament, he was provided with many opportunities to represent the Government and people of Sri Lanka at many international forums. The opportunities came his way because his Excellency the president, the government and ministers were well aware of his capabilities; because they had confidence in his capacity to deliver. The experience gained through various fields of inte rnational exposure has equipped him with an enhanced capacity to serve this country well.
Thus, Chandima is a politician that this country needs at this time.
When the country is breaking new ground and is about launch in to a new era with newly won freedom, his Excellency the president needs hands that can steer this country in to the path of development. Untiring efforts, unbowing attitudes and clear vision of his Excellency the president has just saved this country from the clutches of a gruesome war that plagued it for more than 30 years. What many people thought was unachievable, was reached and championed through the dedicated leadership of his Excellency the president.
In his Excellency the president’s own words, the next phase is about development; about eliminating corruption and waste and accelerating development with dedication.
The country now needs champions of democracy, devoid of corruption and waste, with clear vision for development. We need leaders that are not distracted by petty personal goals; leaders that are not tainted with corruption; leaders that understand regional developmental goals well. Leaders who realise the true needs of regional societies and can target development goals well.
What matters then is the character of persons who present themselves as leaders of people. Their true nature; past record; the fact whether they were able to understand development goals well; the fact whether they were able to deliver to the people in need, when they were in need, irrespective of facts whether they had any political power or not. The country needs leaders who know the law of the country and are capable of living a life of a law abiding citizen. We need leaders who can take this country to the international community with confidence.
Thus,
Chandima re-emerges as a politician that this country needs at this time;
for the future.
