The Appleton Estate, the oldest sugar estate and distillery in Jamaica, is the birthplace of Appleton Estate Jamaica Rums. The Estate comprises 4,614 hectares (11,400 acres) and has its own sugar factory and distillery.
The Estate is nestled in the Nassau Valley in the parish of St. Elizabeth, which is known as the breadbasket of Jamaica because of its fertile soil from which comes many of the Jamaica’s tastiest fruits and vegetables and, of course, the finest rum in the world.
The first known documentation of rum production at the Appleton Estate is dated 1749, however the origins of the Estate date back to 1655 when the English captured Jamaica from the Spaniards.
The magnificent Appleton Estate Jamaica Rums are of a unique style, produced only in Jamaica and only at the Appleton Estate. At Appleton the production of rums is an art and, like the brandies of Cognac and the single malts of Scotland, the process is controlled by Wray and Nephew at every step – from the selection of the varieties of sugar cane that are grown on the estate, the special natural culture of yeast used in fermentation, the unique distillation and blending methods to the bottling of the rum. This means that all Appleton Jamaica Rums demonstrate the unique qualities of the Estate rather than those of a generic blend of rum.
