MUZEON is a sculpture park in the center of Moscow, unique in its setting – instead of enclosed rooms its exposition is shown right in the open air. MUZEON begins its history in 1991, when area around the Central House of Artists was used to store monumental sculptures from the Soviet epoch. The park has been collecting monuments for 20 years; now its collection comprises more than 700 sculptures, including some notable pieces by Vera Mukhina, Ivan Shadr, Yevgeny Vuchetich, Yevgeny Chubarov and various contemporary sculptors.
In 2012 MUZEON has been implementing the project of reconstruction and improvement of its area (architect Yevgeny Ass) and upgrading the conception of its development. There has been built new pavilion School, a summer educational space for lectures and discussions. A summer all-weather cinema MUZEON opened up in August. At the moment the project of re-exposition and construction of promenade are under development.
In 2012 MUZEON has abolished an entrance free. Now all the visitors can come to evaluate the changes and to participate in socio-cultural projects initiated by the park – to see exhibitions of contemporary art, photography or historical material, to watch video art or films, to take kids to the Summer Camp, to water plants in the garden, to swap books in the library, to visit concerts and design art-market.
